Technician - Metallurgy

JOB PURPOSE:

  • To carry out metal cleanliness sampling in terms of inclusion quantification (PoDFA and LiMCA), hydrogen measurement, Thermal and VAC sampling of finished products, and data collection of casting parameters to ensure product conformity with EGA's operational standards for both Primary and Secondary products.
  • Perform hands-on support in collecting samples from hot metal, billet, and slab for metallurgical evaluation, including chemical analysis, macro/microstructure, and mechanical property assessment.
  • Assist in trials related to new consumables, scrap types, and upgrades or commissioning activities by collecting, preparing, and organizing samples for metallographic and metal cleanliness testing.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Safety

  • Actively participates in safety-related tasks, toolbox talks, inspections, risk assessments, and the suggestion scheme program.
  • Ensures adherence to PPE requirements and safe sampling practices especially while handling hot metal or unfamiliar scrap materials.
  • Carryout 5S housekeeping , Monthly 5S inspection & Safety inspection.

 

Quality

  • Carries out routine & non routine metal cleanliness assessment by using Metallurgical measuring equipment during casting from the liquid metal from all casting stations as per metallurgy services department requirements and enter the result in the report.
  • Collects product samples for Metallography study to measure different metallurgical characteristic.
  • Prepares samples for macro and microstructure analysis including etching, cutting, and polishing under supervision of senior staff.
  • Supports new alloy, customer, or diameter qualifications by ensuring timely sample collection, labelling, and transfer to main metallurgy lab.
  • Maintains records for metal cleanliness and metallography testing, ensuring traceability and conformance with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Supports senior technicians in sample handling and trial coordination for customer audits, BQA checks and special customer evaluations.
  • Assists with routine sample collection for trials involving new consumables and scrap materials or casting station modifications.
  • Maintains metallurgical testing equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and basic troubleshooting to prevent downtime and ensure continuous metallurgical testing operations.
  • Takes routine and non-routine samples for chemical compositions analysis.
  • Maintains adequate stocks of consumables and spares for the equipment’s used for metallographic and metal cleanliness.
  • Maintains metallographic & metal cleanliness sampling records in such a way that samples & measurement data are easily retrievable.
  • Actively participates in suggestion scheme program.
  • Carryout verification of the test method as per set frequency
  • Understanding/ implementing the requirements of ISO/IEC17025 as per latest revision
  • Participate in internal quality control programs (Blind samples, intra-lab, R&R, witness test) to benchmark testing accuracy and implement improvements where necessary.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Twelfth (12th) grade high school certificate
  • Successful completion of PEC technical training programme Or having three (3) years’ Technical diploma in Metallurgy or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

  • Two (2) years Metallurgical assistant Technician experience or a minimum of 4 years’ experience in casting operations or in a closely related continuous industrial process

Skills:

  • Ability to influence internally ensuring safety standards
  • Technical report writing skills in the English language
  • Basic knowledge of metallographic sample preparation and safe use of laboratory tools and etchants.
  • Attention to detail in organizing, recording, and labelling samples for various metallurgical evaluations.
  • Awareness of ISO/IEC 17025 principles, data integrity practices, and audit readiness.
  • Ability to collaborate with supervisors and senior technicians to execute trial sampling activities and routine evaluations.
  • Ability to liaise with operation to ensure that non-confirming material is being investigated and dealt with according to the relevant procedures
